מי היא חיית החושך? מפלצת מפחידה או חברה ומגינה? זה הסיפור על אסף ועל חיית החושך שלו. כאשר היה שוכב בחדר בלילה הייתה חיית החושך יוצאת מתחת למיטה, מתנפחת ומתפרסת בכל החדר. אלה היו רגעים של פחד גדול. אבל אסף גילה שיטה לגבור על חיית החושך. הוא הצליח לאלף אותה ואז גם התיידד איתה. חיית החושך ליוותה אותו ברגעים של אבל וגעגוע לאביו שנהרג במלחמה. בזכותה מצא את דרכו כשהלך לאיבוד ואפילו גבר על שודדים אמיתיים. חיית החושך הוא ספר הילדים הראשון שכתב הסופר הנודע אורי אורלב. הוא ראה אור לראשונה ב־1976 והמשיך להיות אהוב על ילדי ישראל בני כל הדורות. הספר זיכה את אורלב בפרס זאב לספרות ילדים ונוער ובפרס אנדרסן והיה לאחד הספרים הקלאסיים בספרות הילדים בישראל. כעת הוא רואה אור במהדורה מחודשת, נגישה לקריאה עם איורים חדשים מאת מעיין גלילי
