בתחילתה של המאה העשרים, בירושלים האדוקה, הנידחת והקרתנית, התאהבו לאה אבושדיד, הנאווה בבנות היישוב, בת למשפחה ספרדית אמידה ומיוחסת, ובן־ציון בן יהודה, בנו של מחייה השפה, פרחח דלפון ואשכנזי לתפארת.
סיפור האהבה שלהם, שנמשך למעלה משלושים שנה, היה בעצם הרומן הראשון שהתנהל בעברית בלבד, אחרי אלפיים שנות.
הוא כלל חרמות, מזימות, איומים ברצח ובהתאבדות, שירים למכביר, גוזמאות לרבבות, תככים ואהבה, בעיקר אהבה.
דרך המכתבים הסוערים שלהם (עם עדויות מסייעות מאליעזר וחמדה בן יהודה) חוקר נכדם, גיל חובב, כמה אמת וכמה שקר היו בסיפור הבוער הזה, ותוהה מה נשאר ממנו כיום.
