אדגר יוצא עם אִמו לחופשה בעיירת הנופש זמרינג שבאוסטריה. אל המלון שבו הם שוהים מזדמן ברון צעיר המחפש לו הרפתקת אהבים. הברון מחבב את עצמו על אדגר הילד - במטרה להגיע דרכו ללב האם. אט-אט מבחין הילד בקשר הנוצר בין הברון לבין אִמו, ומרגיש מרומה. בתום החופשה, עם שובם הביתה, מבין אדגר הנסער כי יש סוד שעליו לשמור. בלהט סוד הוא ספר על אובדן התמימות. היצירה ראתה אור לראשונה בשנת 1911. צווייג מפליא לצלול בה אל עולמו הפנימי של אדגר בן השתים-עשרה ולצייר ברגישות את מסע ההתפכחות שלו. סטפן צוויג, 1942-1881, סופר אוסטרי יהודי, היה הנודע והמצליח ביותר בכותבי הגרמנית אחרי מלחמת העולם הראשונה ומהסופרים הנקראים ביותר בעולם עד היום. ספריו נאסרו לפרסום בגרמניה הנאצית, והוא נאלץ לגלות מארצו. הוא ורעייתו מצאו מקלט בברזיל, שם, בפברואר 1942, שמו קץ לחייהם. ספריו של סטפן צוויג תורגמו לשפות רבות ונמכרו בעשרות מיליוני עותקים בעולם כולו.
